If you are in a specialty occupation, that is an occupation that requires a very high level of skill, you may have heard of the H1B work visa. This visa is specifically for applicants who are in specialty occupations, and in most cases these occupations require a university degree. The United States government begins accepting applications for these visas at a certain time each year, but unfortunately their quota of only 65,000 visas can fill up very quickly – sometimes in just a few days.
As a result, it is very important to ensure that you are fully prepared to apply as quickly as possible when the government begins accepting applications again.
This is because there are so many different requirements for this visa that must be met, including that you are in a certain type of job, that you have a job offer, that your employer has the proper paperwork ready to go on their end and that you are a suitable candidate for this visa.
As the United States undergoes immigration reform and proposes new immigration bills to tackle a number of different issues, technology companies are lobbying for more H1B visas to be given out every year – even double the current quota of around 65,000.
While this may not happen right away, it’s good news for those who wish to apply for an H1B visa and will be beneficial for the United States, who is losing skilled workers and innovation to places like Canada.
