On Tuesday January 20, 2009 I stood amongst the millions who wanted to witness President Obama take his oath of office in person. It was an unforgettable moment of history that I feel fortunate to have been able to personally witness.

Although President Obama has a vision for the United States, could his vision impede the status of Canadians who cross the border to the the United States for business or trade? It has been rumored that Obama might suggest  changes to the NAFTA treaty because he doesn’t see the treaty sufficiently benefiting the American workers. Presently, there is no official statement which has been made by the President with respect to NAFTA. It is expected that when President Obama visits Ottawa in the near future  NAFTA will be on top of the agenda.

But let us hope that Obama is as good for Canada (and Mexio) as he promises to be for the US. In most instances, government policy in the immigration and visa context has gone in the wrong direction for many years. However, the NAFTA agreement stands out as one “bright spot”. Nafta has benefited the economy all three country signatories, Canada, US and Mexico. All ecomonies have florished in many ways thanks to Nafta. So during these hard economic times, the last thing we all need are policies that water-down, restict or cancel Nafta. As the saying goes “if it aint broke, don’t fix it”

Lets hope Obama sees the light when it comes to free trade between our countries–its value has been proven for many years. And in these times, Nafta is more important than ever.
